UP Naming Mahal

November 7th, 2007 · No Comments·

Prof. Danny Arao recently wrote about an unofficial version of UP Naming Mahal by progressive artists Noel Cabangon (formerly of Buklod), Cooky Chua (former lead singer of Color It Red), Chikoy Pura (lead singer of The Jerks), Gary Granada and Bayang Barrios (formerly of Joey Ayala at Ang Bagong Lumad).

He said the new version “has new lyrics, making the hymn even more socially relevant.” I first heard this tibak version of UP Naming Mahal in 1997 as part of a stage play about the life of slain student leader Lean Alejandro. I loved the play and even bought a cassette tape of the songs.

After almost a decade, I found MP3 files of the songs, including UP Naming Mahal, on Gary Granada’s website. Here’s a link to the MP3 and lyrics of this version of UP Naming Mahal.

Prof. Arao also posted a link to the choral version of the university hymn posted on Nhick Ramiro Pacis’s website.

Meanwhile, the UP Diliman website has a feature on “How ‘UP Naming Mahal’ Came to Be”, and Tonyo Cruz wrote on his blog about his “Thoughts about UP and the ‘new’ UP Hymn”.
